Dr. Brent Morse has retired from OLAW  

Dr. Brent Morse has retired from the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) as of Friday April 11, 2025. Dr. Morse was part of OLAW for nineteen years and served as the Director of the Division of Compliance Oversight since 2019.  He graduated from Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and is board certified in laboratory animal medicine. He has served as an ad hoc site visitor for AAALAC, International, as Acting Chief of the Veterinary Medicine Branch of the Division of Veterinary Resources at NIH, and in several management positions as a Veterinary Corps Officer with the U.S. Army. He was also a Commissioned Officer with the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Jacquelyn Tubbs is assuming the role of Acting Director for the Division of Compliance Oversight.

Check out our new pre-recorded webinar series!  In this webinar, we discuss elements of an effective mentorship program, including hands-on training and addressing the gap between didactic modules and practical skills training. Participants will learn strategies for developing a strong training program for all personnel— including IACUC members, IACUC administrators and staff, trainers, veterinarians, IACUC/IACUC administration, PAM, and research staff. Compliance Through Connection Training may be of particular interest to those involved in quality assurance, training, and IACUC administration. This webinar will be available to view on-demand on the OLAW website.

AAALAC releases Position Statements on Veterinary Care and the 3Rs  

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, AAALAC has released a new Position Statement reaffirming its deep-rooted commitment to the ethical framework of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—in the care and use of animals in science.  In addition, AAALAC International's Council on Accreditation has released a new Position Statement on "The Attending Veterinarian, Veterinary Team, and Provision of Veterinary Care."

Biosafety Administrators Association (BSAA) Upcoming Virtual Events 

May 14, 2025, 11:30 AM ET | Virtual Meeting Biosafety Administrators 201 and Best Practices Meeting. Attendance Fees- Members $235 and Non-Members $335.  

The IBC 201/Best Practice meeting is a 5-hour training opportunity for both new and seasoned Biosafety committee members, Biosafety Administrators, program compliance coordinators, and other individuals who contribute to the institution’s biosafety compliance program. Sessions are initiated using didactic presentations that are intended to provide sufficient background on a number of topics to ensure attendees have a general understanding of an overall Institutional Biosafety programs. During each meeting session it is important for attendees to engage in the discussion should any questions arise. Attendees are encouraged to submit ([email protected]) questions PRIOR TO the meeting and may be encouraged to interact by discussing their own institutions practices.
