Register Now: Upcoming OLAW Conversations

Join us for the next OLAW Conversations session entitled "Empowering Change: lessons from case studies on engagement and management,” in the first in a series of interactive sessions on change management. The speakers will discuss practical and helpful change management tools and their application in various scenarios. Speakers include:

The topic of this OLAW conversation will be about how to set up conversations for success when talking with key stakeholders on critical issues within an animal care and use program. If you have a scenario you want to discuss during this webinar, describe it in 1-2 sentences and email it to [email protected] by 5:00 PM on September 18. When mentioning the people involved, use their position titles to describe, e.g. IACUC Chair, IO, PI, researcher, student, etc., and leave out any sensitive, confidential or proprietary information.

About OLAW Conversations: OLAW Conversations is an interactive virtual offering from OLAW where information is presented by subject matter experts, and attendees add to the conversation by sharing their ideas, perspectives, and questions. Experts will also weigh in on participant discussion to offer insights and ensure regulatory compliance, where applicable. These sessions are not recorded and are more discussion-focused. Participation is encouraged from those involved in animal care and use programs, including IACUC members and staff, Institutional Officials, veterinarians, animal facilities personnel, administrators, consultants, and compliance and regulatory personnel. Registration is free.

IMAG MSM Consortium Meeting: Setting up TEAMS for Biomedical Digital Twins
September 30 – October 2, 2024 | 8:00 am –5:30 pm | In-Person (NIH Campus, Bethesda MD) and/or Virtual
Biomedical digital twins (BDT) are an emerging concept in the advancement of alternatives in biomedical research. This 3-day conference hosted by the Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group (IMAG) will discuss the components, challenges, and limitations of BDT. The event is free and open to all for both in-person and virtual attendance.

About IMAG: IMAG is a government group of program officials from multiple federal government agencies supporting research funding for modeling and analysis of biomedical, biological and behavioral systems. IMAG began as a working group comprised of program staff from nine Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and three directorates of the National Science Foundation (NSF). IMAG now represents over 100 program staff from multiple government agencies in the United States and Canada.

IACUC Administrators Best Practice Meeting: Wildlife Focus
October 15th &16th | Gatlinburg, TN | In-person
The IACUC Administrators Association (IAA) is hosting an immersive two-day professional development opportunity designed specifically for Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) professionals. This IACUC Administrators Best Practice Meeting will delve into the intricate regulations and management strategies essential for overseeing research activities involving wild animal species. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the unique challenges and nuisances associated with this type of research, including ethical considerations, compliance with federal and institutional regulations, and effective management of risks to both the animals and the environment. Attendees will gain valuable insights into best practices for ensuring that their IACUC protocols are robust and aligned with the latest regulatory requirements, enabling them to navigate the complexities of research involving wildlife with confidence and precision. Attendance to this program will be limited to approximately 35 individuals.

Effective Communication with the General Public about Scientific Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals Proceedings Available from NAS
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NAS) published the proceedings from a workshop held December 19-20, 2023 titled Effective Communication with the General Public About Scientific Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals. The event discussed how research animals are cared for and treated, the ethical considerations that are involved in these activities, how research with animals has contributed to improvements in animal and human health, and other topics of interest to industry researchers, veterinarians, educators, communication specialists, and other individuals in the research community.
