Compliance Through Connection Training (pre-recorded webinar)

Audience: The program is tailored to IACUC staff, IACUC members, IOs, veterinarians, investigators, compliance personnel, animal care staff and others involved in animal programs.  Compliance Through Connection Training may be of particular interest to those involved in quality assurance, training, and IACUC administration.

Erin Czarniak, BS, CPIA, LATg 
Associate Director of Quality Assurance
Erin Czarniak has been serving as the Associate Director of Quality Assurance at the University of Michigan (U-M) Animal Care and Use Office (ACUO) since 2023. Prior to this role, she was the Assistant Director of Quality Assurance from 2018 to 2023. Erin joined the ACUO team in 2016 as a Quality Assurance Specialist, where she played a crucial role in the program’s development. Before her tenure at ACUO, she successfully launched and managed the Controlled Substance Monitoring Program as a Controlled Substance Monitor for the U-M Office of Research. Erin began her career in research compliance in 2009 and brings strong management and program development skills to her work. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in 2008 and holds the ALAT, LAT, LATg, and CPIA certifications.

Ashley Duval, AAS, LATG
Quality Assurance Specialist-Senior
Ashley Duval has over 20 years of experience in animal research. She began her career in a small laboratory and later transitioned to animal care and husbandry where she gained extensive hands-on experience. Over time, she advanced to the role of supervisor, managing animal care operations. After 12 years in that capacity, Ashley moved to the Animal Care and Use office, where she worked as a Research Compliance Associate. She currently serves as a Quality Assurance Specialist-Senior, bringing a wealth of expertise and dedication to her role in ensuring research compliance and quality standards.

Bill Greer, Assistant Vice President for Research Compliance, University of Michigan
Bill oversees research compliance programs for animal care and use, biosafety, lab safety, and controlled substances. Over his 30+ year career, Bill has held various leadership roles, including Associate Director for Research Compliance, IACUC Vice-Chair, Biosafety Committee Chair at Penn State, and production manager and safety director at Intervet (formerly Tri Bio Laboratories).

In 2005, Bill founded the Research Administrators Best Practice Meeting, creating a platform for research oversight professionals to share program management strategies. He continues to organize at least five annual Best Practice Meetings focused on biosafety and animal care and use programs. In 2010, he chaired the founding committee of the IACUC Administrators Association (IAA), a nonprofit dedicated to education, where he serves as president and board chair.

Since 2007, Bill has been an ad hoc consultant to the AAALAC Council, conducting institutional program reviews and assessments. He also served on the Council of Certified Professional IACUC Administrators (CCPIA). He also facilitates IACUC and IBC Best Practice Meetings, continuing his commitment to supporting the biosafety and IACUC administrative communities.

Taryn Hetrick, LVT
Quality Assurance Specialist
Taryn is a licensed veterinary technician with over 18 years of experience in animal care. She received her veterinary technician’s license in 2006 and spent 16 years as a lab animal veterinary technician, working with a wide range of species. Currently, Taryn is part of the Animal Care and Use Office at the University of Michigan, where she focuses on animal welfare and fostering strong relationships with laboratory staff. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking and spending time with her children as they play sports and engage in music.

Michael Ream, LAT
Quality Assurance Specialist-Senior
Mike has worked in Animal Research for 20 years.  He started his career in animal husbandry. Mike worked as an Animal Technician for 5 years and then moved to being an Animal Care Supervisor for 5 years. Close to his 10-year mark in animal care he made the transition to the compliance side of things. In his 10 years, he has worked as an administrator and as 3 years as a Research Compliance Associate. Mike has been a Quality Assurance Specialist for 6 years.

Topic: This webinar will review elements of an effective mentorship program, including hands-on training and addressing the gap between didactic modules and practical skills training. Participants will learn strategies for developing a strong training program for all personnel- including IACUC members, IACUC administrators and staff, trainers, veterinarians, IACUC/IACUC administration, PAM, and research staff.
